Home Safety Modifications

A comprehensive checklist for making your home safer for care recipients

Falls and accidents in the home are a major concern for caregivers. Many of these incidents can be prevented with simple home modifications. This checklist helps you identify and address potential hazards throughout the home.

Bathroom

  • Install grab bars near toilet and in shower/tub
  • Use non-slip mats or strips in bathtub/shower
  • Install a shower chair or bench
  • Consider a raised toilet seat
  • Ensure adequate lighting
  • Remove locks from bathroom doors (or use ones that unlock from outside)
  • Keep floor dry - use bathmats with non-slip backing

Bedroom

  • Ensure bed is at appropriate height (not too high or low)
  • Install nightlights for visibility
  • Keep pathway to bathroom clear
  • Remove throw rugs or secure them with non-slip backing
  • Ensure phone or emergency call device is accessible

Kitchen

  • Install handrails on both sides of stairs
  • Ensure stairs are well-lit
  • Remove or repair loose carpeting
  • Mark step edges with contrasting tape
  • Install ramps if wheelchair/walker is used
  • Ensure entryways are well-lit
  • Remove obstacles from entry paths

General Safety

  • Install smoke detectors and test monthly
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors
  • Keep emergency numbers visible
  • Ensure phone is accessible in multiple rooms
  • Consider medical alert system
  • Keep first aid kit accessible
  • Ensure adequate lighting in all areas
  • Remove or secure loose cords and wires
