Preventing Caregiver Burnout

Recognize signs and take action to prevent exhaustion

Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that can occur when caregivers don't get the help they need or try to do more than they're able. Recognizing the warning signs early and taking steps to prevent burnout is essential for both your well-being and your ability to provide care.

Warning Signs of Burnout

  • Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried
  • Feeling tired most of the time
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Gaining or losing weight
  • Becoming easily irritated or angry
  • Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy
  • Feeling sad, hopeless, or helpless
  • Having frequent headaches or body aches
  • Abusing alcohol or drugs, including prescription medications
  • Feeling resentful toward the person you're caring for

Take Care of Your Health

Your physical health affects your ability to provide care

  • Eat regular, healthy meals
  • Exercise regularly, even if just a short walk
  • Get enough sleep
  • See your own doctor regularly
  • Take medications as prescribed

Take Regular Breaks

You can't provide good care if you're exhausted

  • Schedule regular respite care
  • Take short breaks throughout the day
  • Ask family and friends for help
  • Use adult day care services
  • Consider hiring professional caregivers for breaks

Stay Connected

Isolation increases stress and burnout risk

  • Maintain friendships and social activities

  • Stay in touch with family and friends
  • Share your feelings with someone you trust
  • Consider counseling or therapy

Set Realistic Expectations

Accept that you can't do everything perfectly

  • Accept help when it's offered
  • Set priorities and let some things go
  • Don't feel guilty about taking breaks
  • Recognize what you can and cannot control
  • Focus on what's most important

Learn to Say No

You don't have to do everything yourself

  • It's okay to decline additional responsibilities
  • Ask for help when you need it
  • Set boundaries with family members
  • Don't feel obligated to do everything
  • Prioritize your own needs too
